Building connections across a learning community

At Whangaparāoa Kindergarten, learning extends well beyond the kindergarten gates.

For the past two years, a unique partnership with the local secondary school has brought Year 11 Drama students into the kindergarten to design, write, and perform original theatrical productions for tamariki. While the initiative forms part of the students' NCEA Level 1 Drama programme, its impact reaches far beyond academic achievement.

Grounded in the college values of Manaakitanga and Whanaungatanga, and deeply aligned with Kaitiaki Kindergartens' commitment to nurturing strong relationships, belonging, and community connection, the partnership reflects a shared belief that education is a collective endeavour. Whether in early childhood or secondary education, we are all working towards the same vision: confident, capable learners who know they have a place in their community.

The relationship provides a living example of tuakana-teina, where older learners guide, support, and inspire younger tamariki. In turn, secondary students develop empathy, leadership, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of their role within the wider community. The kindergarten children experience authentic relationships with older peers who bring creativity, energy, and aspirations into their learning environment.

What began as a curriculum opportunity has evolved into something much richer. Each year, students pass on stories of the experience to the next cohort, creating a tradition that continues to grow in strength and significance. The partnership has become a bridge between sectors, breaking down the artificial boundaries that can exist between stages of education and reinforcing the idea that learning is a lifelong, connected journey.

Importantly, this initiative demonstrates that education is not solely about qualifications or outcomes. It is about building communities where people feel responsible for one another, where relationships are valued, and where everyone has opportunities to contribute. By creating spaces for connection across generations, Whangaparāoa Kindergarten and the college are helping to develop resilient, engaged, and empowered young people who see themselves not only as learners, but also as active citizens within a thriving community.

This partnership reminds us that when schools, early learning services, and communities work together, we create the conditions for all learners to flourish. Through shared values, reciprocal relationships, and collective responsibility, we strengthen the foundations for lifelong learning, belonging, and wellbeing.
