Our History

Our story began in 1954, when our first kindergarten opened in Torbay as part of the East Coast Bays Free Kindergarten Association. As our community grew, so did we, eventually becoming known as the Northern Auckland Free Kindergarten Association, reflecting our wider reach and increasing number of kindergartens.

Today, we carry the name Kaitiaki Kindergartens. The word kaitiaki, meaning guardian or trustee, captures the heart of our role: to care for and protect the wellbeing, learning, and future of each child and community we serve. This shift in name reflects our deep commitment to nurturing not only tamariki, but also the environments, relationships, and values that help them thrive.

From a single kindergarten in 1954 to a network of kindergartens grounded in quality early childhood education, sustainability, and community partnership, Kaitiaki Kindergartens continues to grow while honouring the values that have guided us for over 70 years.
