The Ducky Derby: Small ducks, big community impacts

Each year, a small flotilla of rubber ducks drifts down the local estuary and with it, a powerful reminder that tamariki are raised by communities, not in isolation. Led by Orewa Beach Kindergarten in partnership with its whānau committee, The Ducky Derby brings together families, local businesses, and neighbours in a shared act of connection and purpose.

Community members sponsor a duck, each one released collectively into the awa in a light-hearted race to the finish. While playful in nature, the intent is deeply grounded: funds raised directly support the kindergarten, ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality education and care. In this way, the Derby sustains not just a service, but a vital community hub. A place where relationships are nurtured, identity is affirmed, and aspirations for tamariki are shared.

More than a fundraiser, the Derby is a vehicle for connection and collaboration. It weaves together people across generations, cultures, and roles, making visible the collective responsibility we hold for our young learners. The estuary itself becomes both the setting and the story teller, a living atua that calls for protection, respect, and sustained care. Tamariki experience first hand what it means to belong to a community that values both people and place.

This sense of connectedness is not incidental, it is foundational. When tamariki see their community show up for them, celebrating, contributing, and acting together, they learn that they are part of something bigger than themselves. The Ducky Derby powerfully reinforces a simple truth: strong communities create strong beginnings. Through this initiative, Orewa Beach Kindergarten continues to model what it means to raise tamariki collectively, where connection is the current, and every child moves forward because a community stands behind them!
