Inclusion as a lived reality

hen inclusion is genuinely embedded, it becomes visible not just through policies, but through people. This has been recognised nationally, with Kaitiaki Kindergartens named a finalist in the Inclusive Workplace Award category through Whiria Ngā Kaha Workplace Inclusion Aotearoa.
Across 14 kindergartens in North and West Auckland, Kaitiaki Kindergartens has built a workplace culture where diversity is not accommodated, it is valued. Guided by kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, inclusion is expressed through how decisions are made, how voices are heard, and how kaimahi are supported to bring their whole selves to their mahi.
New leadership roles strengthen cultural capability, wellbeing and specialist support. Open working groups and wānanga ensure decisions are shaped collectively, not in isolation. Neurodiversity and cultural identity are recognised as strengths that enrich teams, model belonging for tamariki, and deepen relationships with whānau.
The impact is tangible. Staff retention is well above sector averages. Kaimahi report high levels of belonging, trust and confidence in expressing who they are. Tamariki experience stability, continuity and authentic role‑modelling of inclusion every day.
This finalist recognition acknowledges something Kaitiaki Kindergartens already knows:
when inclusion is lived with integrity, it becomes a powerful foundation for learning, leadership and community wellbeing.
