Elevating Equity: Daisy’s Story of Belonging, Empowerment, and Transformation

At Kaitiaki Kindergartens, inclusion is not an add-on. It is the heartbeat of who we are. Across our 14 kindergartens, we are reimagining what it means to create spaces where every child, every whānau, and every community member feels seen, valued, and empowered. Daisy’s journey is a powerful testament to what true equity in education looks like—not just for one child, but for an entire community.
From her very first days, Daisy was not viewed through the lens of limitation. She was seen as a child with mana, potential, and the right to thrive. Her kaiako didn’t ask how she might “fit in”—they asked how they could reshape the environment to honour her identity and uplift her strengths. With unwavering commitment, they embedded New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) into daily life, redesigned learning through the lens of Universal Design for Learning, and worked in deep partnership with Daisy’s whānau and support networks to ensure her whole self was welcomed, celebrated, and empowered.
This wasn’t just about access. It was about transformation.
Daisy’s kaiako championed her rights not only within the kindergarten but beyond its gates—partnering with local schools to ensure continuity of inclusive practice. They advocated for systemic change, modelling what it means to create a non-disabling society, in line with the vision of the New Zealand Disability Strategy.
But the most profound change happened within the community.
Daisy’s peers didn’t just learn NZSL—they embraced it. They brought it home, teaching siblings and parents, sparking a ripple effect of empathy, inclusion, and cultural shift. Daisy’s voice, expressed in her language, was not only heard—it was amplified. Her presence invited others into deeper connection, broader understanding, and joyful celebration of difference.
As one kaiako reflected:
"Communication goes beyond spoken words. It’s about understanding, it’s about empathy, and it’s about authentic connection. We envision Daisy’s transition to school sparking a ripple effect—her peers sharing NZSL with classmates, transforming inclusion from a concept into a tidal wave of impact."
Daisy’s story is not an exception—it is a vision for what’s possible when inclusion is not a programme, but a practice embedded in belief. At Kaitiaki Kindergartens, we are building a future where every child’s journey is shaped by equity, every voice is honoured, and every community is transformed through the power of belonging.
