Cultural competence as practice: Filling the bilingual education gap in Parakai
Parakai Kindergarten
12 Apr 2026

Nestled beside Parakai Primary School on Fordyce Road, Parakai Kindergarten has been part of the community since 1995. We welcome tamariki from Parakai, South Head, Helensville, Woodhill, Waitoki and Kaukapakapa. Our beautiful and spacious natural environment—complete with gardens, fruit trees, a mud pit and a rainwater tank—offers endless opportunities for learning through play. This is a place where children feel at home, connected to their community, and free to explore.

At Parakai Kindergarten, our aspirations for tamariki begin with strong, meaningful relationships. Whakawhanaungatanga sits at the heart of all we do: we honour whānau as the child’s first teachers and create an inclusive, welcoming space where everyone’s beliefs, values and needs are upheld. Guided by manaakitanga, we nurture tamariki with aroha, compassion and genuine care—planting the seeds of kindness that we believe will grow throughout their lives.

Our teaching and learning is grounded in Te Whāriki, with a deep commitment to bicultural practice and the principles of Te Tiriti ō Waitangi. Te Ao Māori is woven into our everyday curriculum, ensuring tamariki experience te reo Māori as a living and relevant language. We embrace sustainable practices through Enviroschools, encouraging kaitiakitanga and care for the environment - recycling, composting, gardening and up‑cycling. By nurturing respect for Papatūānuku, we help tamariki develop lifelong habits that honour and protect the natural world.
